How to Make Your CGM Patches to Stick Longer

Decades ago, most people with diabetes need to go to clinics and medical facilities on a regular basis in order to have their glucose levels monitored. But all thanks to the small but reliable CGM sensors, it’s now easier and more convenient. Unfortunately, users of Continuous Glucose Monitors face a different set of challenges. To those who are just about to use a CGM infusion set, here’s the thing-- it’s either it fails to adhere, it sticks but doesn’t stay put, or worse, it comes off even before you’re due to change your set. As annoying as those may sound (in case you haven’t used a CGM yet), fortunately these problems are easy to fix. So if you are a diabetic who has a fairly active lifestyle, then consider these 5 tips we have for you to make your CGM patches stick longer:

As annoying as those may sound (in case you haven’t used a CGM yet), fortunately these problems are easy to fix. So if you are a diabetic who has a fairly active lifestyle, then consider these 5 tips we have for you to make your CGM patches stick longer:

3 (2).jpg

Don’t just randomly choose a site.

Always consider where you’re wearing it-- not only because in general one area in your body may not be as stickier than the rest, but more for the fact that your lifestyle and daily activities will always affect the length of time you’re able to wear your CGM set. Take the case of surfers--they need to avoid placing it on their arms because the strong crashing waves may tear away the CGM set from their arms as opposed to when it’s placed on their abs or tummy area. Choose the best area for your CGM patch depending on what you’re planning to do for the day or the rest of the week.

4 (2).jpg

Prep well. Always.

Like what we’ve mentioned earlier, some body parts may not be as stickier than the others. So apart from choosing those areas that are generally less oily, less moist and less stable, it is important that you know how to prep the site well. Best way is to clean the skin with a topical antimicrobial solution, such as isopropyl alcohol, and allow to dry. If you believe that your sweat glands are extra active than the others, it will also help to use an antiperspirant after you clean the site and let it dry before putting on the CGM.

Discover the best technique.

The truth remains even when we’re talking about the use of CGM sets: what works for others doesn’t mean it’ll work for you as well. Especially when you’ve experienced CGM failures and issues a million times already, maybe you should already consider your technique as the culprit--that maybe, your CGM sensor oftens falls off easily despite your best efforts to tape it in place because on how you do it. Carefully examine your insertion technique. Example, if you really want to place it at the back of your hip, make sure that you can reach it well enough that you’re able to insert the needle at the correct angle, making sure it’s flat and steady.

Choose the best CGM patch for you.

It’s a fact. Maybe the reason why your CGM set always seems to be dislodged whenever or wherever is, you haven’t found the CGM adhesive patch that’s perfect for you - one that sticks despite your movements, despite the weather, despite all the sweat, and even if you wear it while taking a shower. Despite your best efforts to find it, maybe the problem is what you’ve been choosing to use all this time.

That said, maybe you haven’t used the California Home Goods CGM Patches yet. This amazing first first-aid and self-care accessory takes on a number of names, actually-- self-adherent wraps, cohesive bandages, self-adhering elastic bandage, compression bandages and more. But no matter how do you prefer to call them, one thing remains: you can rely on them to help you get a speedy recovery (for almost all kinds of medical conditions and situations)!

So if you want to know how you could make the most out of the California Home Goods Self-Adherent Bandage Tape, here are just a few of its most common applications:

2.jpg

Wound Dressing Safety

After dressing  a wound, a cut, stitches after a surgery or a burnt area, we normally cover it with a bandage and secure it with a tape (just in case you don’t have a Band Aid available). But how many times have you experienced adjusting it several times or feeling the need to change the gauze once again just because the tape got loose after getting it wet while taking a shower or sometimes even after moving a bit? We’re guessing, a lot. The cohesive bandage tape is your perfect solution for that!

Without needing tapes, it will secure the dressing and gauze you have put on the wound site so you never have to dress and cover it once again. Most of all, it will also provide additional protection for your wound so it won’t get infected as you wait for it to heal. But don’t forget to use gauze sponges and antibacterial ointments before you wrap your wound with our Self-Adherent Wrap!

3.jpg

Athletic Protection

When working out and while doing sports activities, it’s almost always expected to get injured or experience some muscle and joint pain at the very least. Hence, most athletes and gym-rats nowadays use these amazing self-adhering wraps so that even if they feel pain in their bodies, they could still do what they love!

Our cohesive bandages protect and tightly secure your muscles and joints without sticking to your hair-- so moving ever so briskly won’t ever be a problem even if you have a body part covered in bandage.

4.jpg

Injury Immobilization

Speaking of injuries, everyone who has experienced getting sprains, strained muscles, dislocated bones, splints, and the like knows that it’s just too challenging to move and do your normal day-to-day activities. In addition, if you need to immobilize your injury and you only use the regular cloth bandage with a clip, it’ll be harder to move-- or worse, your recovery will take a lot longer.

So if you want to tightly secure and immobilize your injuries without having the additional hassle of re-adjusting or replacing your bandage, then go with the kind of bandage wrap that sticks to itself and won’t move even if you do.

5.jpg

Inflammation Prevention

The R-I-C-E first aid treatment for injuries is the basic and primary solution for common injuries like bruises and sprains. And if you must know, R is for rest, I is for ice, C is for compression, and E is for elevation. The C or Compression part of the method is important because it will prevent postoperative swelling, edema, and inflammation.

Now elastic cohesive bandages are the perfect first-aid accessory for compression. It does just a great job in swelling down the injury or affected area. The only thing you should remember is that compression shouldn’t be too loose nor too tight. You also have to know the limit on how long you should compress the area. When done poorly or wrongly, the affected body part won’t be able to get the amount of blood flow it needs to quickly recover.

6.jpg

Pet care

Every pet lover knows how frustrating or devastating it is when our dogs or cats get injured, wounded, or worse have gone through an operation. Because apart from it being emotionally draining for both us and our furry pals, it is tad bit more challenging to take care of them whenever a part of their body is hurt. Simply, if we do not dress their wound or wrap their injury properly, tendency is, they’ll lick or bite it-- causing it to recover more slowly or get complications.

It’s just impossible to use the common Band Aid, gauze with tape, or cloth bandage with clips on them, right? After just a few minutes you’ll see it removed. Thus, using our Self-Adherent Elastic Tape on them is your best bet! They’ll stay put no matter what!

After knowing all the applications of the California Home Goods Self-Adherent Bandage Wraps, there’s only one advice we could give you. The best thing you could do for now is-- don’t wait for an emergency or injury before you go and buy medical supplies or even have a first aid kit in your home. So while everyone in your household doesn’t have any kind of injury (knock on wood), it’s best that you already stock up on these ever-reliable Self-adhering Bandage Tapes now! Eggnogs are a Christmas staple. But because you’re determined to take this year’s dessert menu to a different level, then show your skills by making it into this decadent holiday pie:

For the crust, you’ll need:

  • 1 sleeve (200 g) graham crackers

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted

For the eggnog cream filling, you’ll need:

  • 1 (370 mL) can evaporated milk or store-bought eggnog

  • 1 cup whole milk (3.25%)

  • ½ cup whipping cream (35%)

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg

  • 2 tsp powdered gelatin

  • ¼ cup cornstarch

  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract

  • ½ tsp rum or rum extract (optional)

For the whipping cream, you’ll need:

  • 1 cup whipping cream (35%)

  • 1 Tbsp rum or 1/2 tsp rum extract

  • 1 Tbsp granulated sugar

Start by making the crust. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Then in a food processor, pulse crackers, salt, cinnamon, sugar, and butter until fully combined. Reserve 3 Tbsp for garnish. Firmly press remaining crust into the bottom of your baking ramekins. Bake for 5-7 minutes while constantly checking. Cool completely.

To make the eggnog filling, whisk all filling ingredients together in a medium saucepan until well combined. Whisking constantly, cook over medium heat, until mixture is boiling, 5 to 10 minutes. Once boiling, continue whisking and cook for 30 seconds. Chill. After chilling, whisk filling again until smooth and lump-free; pour into prepared crust and smooth out evenly. Bake at 350ºF for 7-8 minutes.

While chilling the filling, begin rum whipped cream. In a stand mixer or by hand with a whisk, beat 1 cup whipping cream, rum and sugar until medium-firm peaks form. Spoon whipped cream over filling and garnish with reserved crust crumbles. Serve chilled. Let them enjoy directly from the lovely ramekins.

Rock the most fitting theme

Because your motif is now set, it’s time you carefully choose what kind of theme will suit your holiday party. Rose gold is lovely for themes like vintage glam, boho chic, rustic minimalist, champagne royalty, and a lot more. Just remember that while choosing, you have to consider factors like the venue, time of the party, age bracket and number of guests, and so on.

3.jpg

A festive feast of bubbly and treats

What’s a party without a feast, right? Whether you’re hosting a hefty dinner plus drinks after, or just drinks, or a simple dinner, you can’t deny the fact that the food AND drinks still matter. While we’re not telling you to serve only pink or rose-colored entrees, desserts, and beverages, it wouldn’t hurt if you’d make an effort to make your buffet or dining table in sync with your theme and motif. Just like pairing pink champagne with a nicely dressed grazing table. Spark your creativity and make your guests even more eager to enjoy what you have prepared for them. See our recipes in the next post [put link to the recipe blog: holiday desserts] so you’ll have an idea for your dessert table.

Yes, focal points like your buffet table is important, but never ignore the other areas. Once you see a space for rose gold party decor and ornaments, you go for it. Show your rose gold theme in your sofa, your windows, your drink station, or even in the presents under your tree.

5.jpg

And because getting rentals isn’t really a practical move, thank goodness there are now disposable rose gold party cups, paper plates, plastic flatware, and more! Don’t forget the rose gold table napkins, coasters, centerpieces, and other elements that’ll add that sophisticated charm to your guests’ dining (or drinking) experience.

Dijon Chicken and Veggies

COMMON PARTY LEFTOVERS:  Roast or grilled chicken (the breast part always gets left out), undressed salads or sliced veggies

OTHER INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED:

2 tbsp olive oil (divided)

1-2 cloves garlic, minced

Salt and pepper

Potatoes

Asparagus

1-2 tbsp Dijon mustard

3 tbsps Coconut milk or Half and Half

*other veggie leftovers you have that you wish to include*

Preheat your oven to 400-425 degrees F. Lightly coat all the veggies with salt, pepper and some olive oil. You can even sprinkle some with parmesan cheese and basil if you want a bit more tasty. Lay out all the veggies in a sheet pan, then pop it in the oven.

Get your leftover grilled/baked chicken. If all you’ve got are pure white meat, you can either slice them into strips, nuggets, or cubes, however you like them. But if what you have left are a variety of parts, then you can simply cut them into a tad bit smaller pieces. Put those in a bowl then add the Dijon mustard, milk or half & half, salt and pepper. Coat all the chicken parts well.

Take out your veggies from the oven. Set aside. In a pan under low to medium heat, saute your garlic lightly in olive oil. Just toss the chicken in, put the remaining sauce/dressing if there’s any. Since the chicken are already cooked, just taste every now and then if the chicken has already absorbed the taste, and sauce has been reduced.

Pack your chicken and veggies in the lunch meal containers. Let the steam/hot air out and don’t cover them yet if you’re not yet leaving the house.

Cauliflower Beef Burrito Bowl

COMMON PARTY LEFTOVERS:  Steak, roast beef, salads

OTHER INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED:

Riced cauliflower (unless you prefer it raw, then you can simply grate some cauliflower)

1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed

1 cup frozen corn kernels

2 tablespoons water

1/2 teaspoon chili powder

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro, divided

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (from 2 to 3 medium limes)

1 cup pico de gallo or salsa

1 medium avocado, peeled, pitted, and sliced

Place the beans, corn, water, chili powder, cumin, and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until heated through, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from the heat.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large, high-sided skillet over medium heat until shimmering. Add the riced cauliflower and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the cauliflower is heated through and just tender, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from the heat. Add 1/4 cup of the cilantro and the lime juice, and stir to combine.

Pack your cauliflower rice in the biggest compartment of the meal prep container or bento lunch box. Top with your bean and corn mixture, sliced beef, salsa or pico de gallo, avocado, and sprinkle with cheese (if you want).

Asian Stir Fry Noodles

COMMON PARTY LEFTOVERS:  any kind of meat - beef, chicken, or even pork, cooked noodles (spaghetti or fettuccine), some veggies

OTHER INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED:

1.5 tablespoon soy sauce

1.5 tablespoon rice wine vinegar

1 tsp chili garlic sauce

1.5 teaspoon cornstarch

Make Cleaning a Habit You Can’t Fix

Let’s be honest-- cleaning gym bags and shoes don’t really happen as often as they should. And while everyone knows about the fact that when there’s bad smell there’s bacteria, they still won’t clean the bag or the pair of shoes unless the nasty is already too much to handle. Wash ‘em (by machine or by hand). Wipe them with anti-bacterial wet wipes in between wash days. Remember there’s no bad odor a good cleaning can’t fix.

Let Them Rest and Relax

Another cause for bad odors is moisture-- and worse, that’s moisture from your sweat, that is. The simplest and easiest thing you can do to avoid a stinky gym bag is to ALWAYS empty it out once you get home from a workout. Don’t close it and let it breathe. On your rest days, make your bag and shoes rest too. Lay them out in open air (they should be clean first) or better if under the sun. If possible, it’s best to hang them as well.

Try These Effective Home Remedies

Now if you think the first two are a bit hard for you because you go to the gym every single day and you just don’t have a spare bag or pair of training shoes, then you could easily put these inside so they’ll do the odor absorbing for you:

  • Tea Bags - leave unused tea bags inside for at least a night

  • Fabric Softener Sheets - these are handy because you can use your bag/shoe while you keep the fragrant sheets inside

  • Silica Gel Packs - great for keeping moisture out

  • Essential Oils - mix a few drops of your preferred essential oils with water and spritz some inside, then let them dry first before heading to the gym

  • Activated Bamboo Charcoal - don’t underestimate these cute little rustic bags because they sure can solve your stinky gym bag or stinky shoe problems! Never just masking bad smells, these carbon-activated bamboo charcoal bags work round the clock to absorb all the nasty - unpleasant odors, bacteria, allergens, excess moisture, and even mold & mildew. Because of that, having no scent at all won’t really matter. What’s important is, they are doing a great job in keeping your workout essentials fresh.
