Here are the equipment you’ll need:
Heatproof glass measuring cup
Metal measuring spoons
Stainless steel or thick glass pyrex mixing bowls
Metal spoon for mixing
Saucepan or double boiler
Easy-to-find ingredients you’ll use:
1 Part Beeswax pellets or Soy Wax pearls
2 Parts Shea butter, Cocoa butter, or Mango butter
1.5 Parts Coconut Oil
.5 Part Vitamin E oil
Essential Oil/s of your choice
1-2 drops of honey (if you prefer your balm to have a bit of sweetness)
If you’re doing this DIY craft with your kids, remember to prepare and organize all the things you’re going to need before actually calling your kids to do it. As there are procedures that are ‘dangerous’ to them, where they could possibly burn their hands, keep in mind that you need to assign them the easier tasks like measuring and mixing the ingredients or dropping the essential oils.
So the first thing you (or your kids) have to do is measure your butter and oil and put them in the heatproof glass measuring cup. Melt them in the microwave for about 30-45 seconds until they’re completely melted. Then add as much wax to the measuring cup so you would have enough to make about ¾ cup of melted mixture. You can either put this back inside the microwave to melt the whole mixture again or you may use a double boiler (or makeshift double boiler) so you could see the texture of your mixture as it melts down. Again, don’t forget that at this point the measuring cup will get really hot so make sure your kids won’t touch it.
Now pour the melted mixture into your mixing bowls. If you’re going to make lip balms of different scents and flavors, just pour them into separate bowls. After transferring, it’s now time to put the scents and flavors you’ve chosen for your lip balms. Drop just a few essential oils, flavor oils, or honey into each bowl and mix.
Before our final step, double check if the consistency of your lip balm is just the want you want it. To do that, just take out the stainless steel spoon you used for mixing, then wait for a few seconds until what’s left on the spoon hardens. If you want to make it softer, just add a bit more oil. If you want it to be harder, just add more wax.
Finally, take out your lip balm crafting kit from California Home Goods. The best part about this kit is that you won’t have to transfer your mixture into syringes or squeeze bottles just to neatly transfer the mixture into the lip balm tubes. Just pour the mixture from the bowl to the crafting kit. One batch makes 50 tubes, so it’s really perfect if you’re making different scents and flavors. After filling up all of the tubes, just use the scraper to evenly distribute your mixture up to the top of each tube.
Wait for about 1 to 2 hours for the lip balm to settle and form nicely. You may use the scraper again to remove the excess wax from the tray. Then, remove the tubes and put the caps immediately to keep them all sanitary. Then you’re done!
